"For the whole nation not to be familiar with Island Reggae, and for him to choose something from Hawaii, from his roots, really felt like his humility shined to choose to stick with who he is," De Peralta shared with KITV4.
Winning Season 21, Iam Tongi now has the honor of touring with Kolohe Kai as the legendary Island Reggae band takes their new album for a live spin. Kolohe Kai marked their debut in 2009 with "This is the Life". Highly regarded as a pioneer in Pacific Island Reggae Music, the band quickly caught the public eye especially with their hit "Cool Down". Said to infuse "the localism of ukulele music with rhythms of roots reggae," their music packs unique character and sunny beats that one can't simply find anywhere else. Dedicated to the "Aloha Life", De Peralta actually turned down a record deal to keep his music as authentic as possible. The man said he "just wanted to surf and live a simple life and not be in that industry so I rejected it," explaining that he just wanted to enjoy being a Hawaii artist.
Around the world, the band has caught the public eye as they made music on their own. Their 2013 LP "Paradise" was awarded "Reggae Album of the Year" at the Na Hoku Hano Hano Awards, which is pretty much Hawaii's Grammys equivalent. In 2019 at the Island Music Awards, "Summer to Winter" bagged Reggae Album of the Year.
With a new album spreading the Island love, Kolohe Kai shows no sign of hitting pause. Each day, there's a playlist fitting the island vibes. Make sure to celebrate What Aloha Means with the band at their U.S. tour this year. Book those tickets now!
